Abadiania, Brazil

Abadiania blossoms, January 2014

This small rural town is a blend of contrasts, initiating reflection on many levels. Beautiful blossoms are everywhere. Dusty clay streets surprise you with a mix of colourful and drab buildings side-by-side. Free-roaming roosters and hens walk along the roadside, with motorcycles occasionally breaking the quiet.

But I’m writing about why people come to Abadiania when it doesn’t have the dazzle of Rio de Janeiro. I’ve meet people that have returned six times and more, some that moved from Europe to find a modest home in this small town. Before leaving, a local Abadiania resident informed me that the population now approaches 14,000 – a figure that is still surprising until you realize the main attraction area is but one corner on the outskirts of the town…. the corner with the Casa de Dom Inaçio, where John of God holds weekly sessions.

Hotels or lodgings are called pousadas, referring to a Bread and Breakfast, a guesthouse or small hotel. They consist of small rooms containing a bathroom with a shower, toilet and sink. Yes, the shower may be a trickle in some places but it’s warm, running water. Most pousadas are built around a central courtyard, with additional rooms along three sides that open into a greenery area. Those are in addition to rooms inside the building. Meals are the home-cooked variety, made from fresh ingredients with a mix of vegetarian and meat selections, served buffet-style.

It’s the energy channeled though John of God, respected as one of the most powerful healers worldwide, that draws people to Abadiania. His humble origins as Joao Teixeira de Faria are well-written about, including his work of helping the poor for many decades without asking for payment, and miracles that have happened when he channels the spirit entities. He takes no personal credit for any changes.

No religious affiliation is promoted, although conventional Christian prayers are frequently given in Portuguese and other languages. While it might be assumed that John of God is Catholic because familiar prayers within that religion are often heard, his faith is termed Spiritism, in honour of beneficent spirit beings that are no longer in body but work through his form during sessions. It was an interfaith inspiration to see a Buddhist monk in full attire sitting among the many in the Current Room, where they assist in holding the energy balance while the Entity works with the hundreds who pass by him, gently touching each hand, directing their self-work for the week. The entire area holds a space that feels similar to a church of the ages, steeped in prayers and faith to exude a tangible sacredness.

Healing of physical ills is not the only benefit people may receive here. Many have their faith deepened, or their comprehension expanded in realization that there is more to our world that what we can physically see. There are various levels of life and living that may be influenced through this experience.

As John of God’s fame grew worldwide, Brazil recently aired the story on various local TV channels, resulting in more people coming to join the long lines that the Entity sees weekly on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This is not a place for socialization as much as a place for reflection and processing or growth. Much credit goes to the efficient method of organization that manages the number of people gathered to pass before the Entity. There’s no need to rush or push, because he sees them all.

The intensity of the energy during the sessions held at the Casa is very evident. It doesn’t just occur when you pass in front of the Entity, it extends throughout the Casa gardens and into the town for some distance. Sitting in the gardens throughout the week is a restorative experience for many, whether meditating, reading or quietly basking in the peaceful surroundings. Of course, this energy is everywhere in our world. But here, it can be noticeably felt when intensified through the John of God sessions.

Does everyone get their miracle? You can never tell if you’ll receive improvement in your physical body, an energy body, or at a soul level… but many do this journey multiple times. Some who still are in a wheelchair say that their level of resistance versus acceptance changed dramatically. And many relate startling changes they had with physical ills.

I believe that whatever is most appropriate to compliment your particular journey in this lifetime will be given, but that’s an individual discovery for each of us. It isn’t a ‘fix-all’ to come to Abadiania, but the high energy is undeniable and I tend to think that everyone leaves with a difference, it just might not be what they expected.

On the subject of creating or improving your own reality – I added a book review in the Awareness section of the Health Topics menu, on the Seth book called The Nature of Your Personal Reality. Of the various books in the Seth series, I found this an excellent choice that easily leads to more.
